1. Asus RT-AX92U: The first WiFi 6 Mesh system

Asus-RT-AX92U

The Asus RT-AX92U WiFi system is the first Mesh system to use the WiFi 6 standard. This new WiFi standard will make it possible to reach speeds higher than the current WiFi 5 and offer new advanced network functionalities.

If this WiFi system is in first place in my ranking (instead of Google Wifi) it is because of this new WiFi 6 standard. this technology will become more popular and become standardized soon.

The use of this standard today remains limited. However, having carried out my tests on a device using WiFi 6 “AX” I  guarantee you that this standard will become very popular in the universe of networks: in 1 year everyone will change their router/internet box to get up to date. The network performance of the Asus Mesh network surprised me: speed, stability, advanced features and excellent design come together in one device.

A I mesh technology allows you to establish an even stronger wifi system with 802.11ax technology as wireless backhaul to transmit data between two rt ax92u, ensuring the most stable wifi for connected devices

At the installation level, the whole procedure is assisted thanks to the Asus application which then allows you to manage the network with your fingertips on your smartphone or tablet.

It is a most powerful mesh system that I recommend the users who want to access the best available performance.

2. Google WiFi: I recommend it

Google-WiFi

Google WiFi mesh system is one of the best mesh wifi system in the network market launched by Google.

When it comes to simplicity in high-tech products we often hear about Apple, this time however it is Google that we find at the top of my ranking. The wifi system is made up of one or two satellites that Google calls “Wi-Fi points” and a router each covering 150 m², making a total coverage of 450 m² with 3 boxes. The wifi points have cool design of thick white and smooth palaces which provide seamless WiFi coverage throughout your home

Each “point” has a 4-core ARM processor with 512 MB of Ram, 4 GB of eMMC Flash memory, a WiFi AC1200 802.11ac and 802.11s chip (mesh) and a Bluetooth card. For this model, Google combines its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a single band which means that you will not be able to adjust the QoS to assign a device to a particular band. However, these routers using Beamforming technology can automatically connect your device to the nearest WiFi terminal / with the best reception. I just regret the absence of a USB port to set up a NAS server easily or to connect a network printer.

Google is already getting a place for itself in the ranking of Mesh systems. However, that is not all because Google Wifi also has, in my opinion, the best interface on their mobile application. This is indeed very intuitive and allows you to manage your network at your fingertips as well as to configure a guest network, the maximum network speeds, port forwarding and much more.

I recommend this model to people who want a WiFi system that is very simple to set up and manage thanks to the Google application and more than appropriate performance thanks to quality components.

Summary:

  • Size: solid and neat design
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC1200 2×2 Wave 2 Wi-Fi
  • Features: Router, Access point, Bridge
  • Network Assist technology.
  • Supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac.
  • Advanced: No antivirus, no VPN, IFTTT support (Alexa, Google assistant…)

3. Netgear Orbi RBK50: The best WiFi mesh system

Netgear-Orbi

Netgear Orbi RBK50 is also a very powerful mesh system. It is one of the giants of the network world and it is they who have managed to win the title of “best mesh system” in my ranking with the Orbi RBK50 system, with its 350 m² of range. If I did not place this wifi system first it is because of its high price which leads me to recommend the Google system instead.

Composed of a router and one or two very similar satellites, the Orbi WiFi system is equipped with ultra-fast processing speed, simultaneous Mu-MiMo network data streams and numerous customizable functions. It is a tri-band WiFi system with 5 internal antennas in the router and 4 in the satellites and it is capable of providing significant bit rates up to 1266 Mbps (400 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz and 866 Mbps band on the 5 GHz band).

Its additional 5 GHz band is reserved for communication between the router and the satellites and reaches speeds of up to 1733 Mbps. The router has 3 Gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port and a USB 2.0 port. I feel shame it does not offer a USB 3.0 port to speed up transfer over files on the network. On satellites, there are 4 Gigabit LAN ports and a USB 2.0 port. All these ports give you a huge possibility of connectivity both for devices to connect via Ethernet and to easily create a NAS on the network.

Netgear’s Orbi RBK50 system is the best I have tested this year, it is both efficient in terms of speed and signal range, it has extensive connectivity and a neat design that easily integrate into your interior. I recommend it to people who want the best in terms of Mesh technology or people who need good speed in a large house.

Summary:

  • Size: High level but neat design
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC3000
  • 3Gbps Speed
  • Covers up to 5,000 sq. ft.
  • 25+ devices connect
  • Features: Router, Access point, Bridge
  • Advanced: Antivirus, WPA2, MU-MIMO, DoS, VPN and IFTTT support (Alexa, Google assistant…)

4. TP-Link Deco M5: The best range

best mesh wifi system

After a test of this product last year, I fell in love with this Mesh system by TP-Link.

It is simply the best mesh system with the best coverage 600 m² announced by the manufacturer. During my tests, the range of this router was still excellent allowing me even to connect to the internet from the back of my garden (Well, ok, my garden is not very large. But no other router tested has allowed me to connect from this remote position.

The design of the product is quite simple and reminds me of these routers that are often found in hotels and stations. Its flexible design will allow you to install it almost anywhere.

The router uses the AC2200 WiFi standard to achieve a speed that is more than enough for watching HD video streaming or playing heavy video games.

The installation of the TP-Link system is one of the simplest and easiest tasks, even challenging the Asus Lyra system, which presents it a little lower as the simplest Mesh System.

I recommend this mesh wifi system to all users who want a very large network that is easy to install at home.

Summary :

  • Size: Compact and neat design
  • Simplicity: Easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network

5. Asus Lyra: The easiest to use

best mesh wifi system

Asus Lyra mesh routers as you already know, when it comes to network products, I’m a fan of Asus products! Their WiFi system is very efficient and I was not really disappointed, but I would have liked to see this year a WiFi gaming system from Asus.

Remember that all the latest routers from Asus are Mesh compatible. This means that you can install a powerful Asus router like the RT-AC88U. Then connect 2 Asus Lyra satellites to extend the range of the WiFi network. This allows you to install a more powerful gaming router or VPN router to manage the most demanding connections in the home/office and to use the satellites to connect mobile devices or less consuming bandwidth.

The Asus Lyra system is easy to install and configure in my tests. Composed of two WiFi hubs, like the others on the list. It ultimately only offers an extended WiFi network. Asus has indeed planned that you move around the house and when it becomes more interesting for you to use another access point, the change is done automatically. It is a Tri-band router, which separates the different bands well allowing you to take advantage of the high bandwidth of the frequency 5 GHz when you are close to the router and the extended signal range of the 2.4 band GHz when you are far away. You can make sure to dedicate a band of the router to your games, another to your classic surfing activities (web browsing, emails …) and the last to your professional activities.

Regarding your internet security, Asus offers you professional quality protection with this router provided by Asus AiProtection technology as well as many additional security options such as parental control. This WiFi system can be configured and managed remotely thanks to the mobile application provided by Asus, this application is very easy to use like this WiFi system. This is why I recommend it if you do not know much about the network and want a powerful WiFi system at home.

6. Linksys Velop: Tri-band AC2200

Linksys-Velop

Linksys Velop Tri-band AC2200 WiFi system consists of two or three elegant white “towers” that are roughly the size of a Jenga tower. The Linksys offers us a system with a neat design that we would prefer to highlight in the room rather than hiding it like some old routers.

Each access point covers 140 m², covering 280 m² with a satellite and 420 m² with 2 satellites. This network coverage is in the average of my tests, but this is not why this router stands out from the competition…

Each device is an AC2200 router that provides maximum speeds of 400 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. Velop is one of the few Wi-Fi systems supporting multi-user, multi-input, multi-output (Mu-MiMo) data streaming, which results in better overall network stability and faster little improved. This system also offers a lot of customizable features in the mobile application, including parental control, intelligent QoS and the creation of a guest network.

The manufacturer of this WiFi system announces a maximum network speed of 6.6 Mbps with this router. Be careful: this is the maximum cumulative speed of the three cumulative terminals.

I recommend this WiFi system to people who want a stable wide area network at home without paying for the more expensive model.

Summary :

  • Size: unique and neat design
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC2200

7. Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD: The Amazon’s choice

best mesh wifi system

Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD mesh wifi system is one of the best range wifi systems. The Ubiquiti WiFi system is the one I used for 1 year at home to bring WiFi to the guest bedroom at the back of the house and to my workshop in the garage on the opposite side. Among the devices sold by Ubiquiti, the AmpliFi HD is the one I prefer.

Designed for large multi-story houses with thick walls and regular obstacles. This device uses 6 high-density long-range antennas to cover up to 10,000 sq. ft with its WiFi network! (Do not worry, the antennas are internal). The system consists of a router and one or two satellites.  They offer performance in signal range simply impressive!

Amplifi HD offers an easy-to-use touchscreen display. The LCD touch screen displays the time, date, and other important network information. It is possible to go to the router settings and display additional information relating to the network such as the current network speed (upload and download) or the IP addresses of the router and the WAN.

The router offers an 802.11 AC single-core processor that supports the 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi bands to deliver a total speed of up to 5.25 Gbps. As on other WiFi systems, Ubiquiti also offers users to control the network from a mobile application. This allows you to access a lot of information on the network as well as manage the parameters. The mobile application is very amazing and allows many customizations, Create family profiles, schedule internet access, and control guess access.

Ubiquiti has added a network diagnostic tool to the application to allow you to automatically detect the source of network interference/problems in your home. Unfortunately, the Ubiquiti system does not support Mu-MIMO, which usually improves performance when many devices are connected.

I recommend this router to everyone who wants a stable and efficient product at home, despite speeds that are sometimes slightly lower than the other routers.

Summary:

8. TP-Link Deco M4: Cheap

deco-m4

The Deco M4 router is offered by the TP-Link brand, now famous in the network market. In this WiFi system, Tp-Link provides us a set of 2 or 3 white units, cool design. A little heavy on their size because of their tower shape, these Mesh routers are still easy to set up. The manufacturer has focused on the price of the product by making it very accessible.

Like the Asus system, TP-Link has decided to gather the 3 networks under the same SSID to let the routers determine on which frequency you should be connected to benefit from the best performance. This will allow you to move around the house freely without loss of signal and without having to reconnect to the next access point as soon as you move away from the router. Unfortunately, this also has a disadvantage: this is not being able to choose yourself which network to connect which device to optimize the use of bandwidth.

No builtin anti-virus protection like the other models of the same brand. As always with mesh systems, the installation of the router is rather simple and TP-Link even offers us a complete tutorial directly on the network management application. It will tell you where to place the boxes to optimize your signal and allow you to access more advanced network settings to make your changes.

This WiFi system from TP-Link is the one I recommend for families/households with less than 15 devices to connect to the network. It is cost-effective and its performance is quite well for internet use (emails, web browsing and Youtube / Netflix streaming).

Summary :

  • Size: little bit heavy in size and osm design
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC1200
  • Coverage up to 5,500 sq. ft
  • Features: Router, Access point, Bridge
  • Advanced: No antivirus, No integrated VPN, IFTTT support (Alexa, Google assistant…)

9. Tenda Nova MW6: Recommended by Amazon

best mesh wifi system

The mention “Recommended by Amazon” on the site of the famous web giant is attributed to the product gathering the most positive signals: numerous satisfied customer comments, regular sales… I decided to present the Tenda Nova MW6 to you because it is currently the recommended product in the “wifi mesh” category by Amazon.

It is a classic WiFi system whose nodes are in cubes. This makes them solid and very stylish. The Tenda Nova only has 4 small antennas and its signal range is not good in my tests. This WiFi system will still be suitable for a small house.

The Tenda Nova has 2 ethernet ports per node, to connect wired devices requiring a more stable and faster connection. And WiFi 5 AC1200 technology for wireless devices.

As always Tenda offers us a mobile application to manage the entire network. The application is not the most intuitive but we find all the important features after a moment of research.

It is not my preferred wifi system because of its limited range and its lower bandwidth than the competition. However, it will certainly be suitable for a family that does not need high bandwidth.

Summary:

  • Size: little bit heavy router and neat design
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC1200
  • Nova’s Wave 2.0 MU-MIMO, beamforming technology
  • Features: Router, Access point, Bridge
  • Advanced: Antivirus, integrated VPN, IFTTT support (Alexa, Google assistant…)

10. TP-Link Deco P7: Mesh + PLC!

best mesh wifi systemAfter the M9 and the M5 presented above on this page, I also wanted to present an original model from TP-Link which brings together two interesting network technologies: the Mesh and the PLC.

The PLC is a technology that allows network information to pass over the household electrical network. It is a technology that has existed for a few years now but which had not yet been used in parallel with Mesh technology.

This combination of the two technologies will be particularly interesting in a house with very thick reinforced concrete walls or a large hangar, where it is usually impossible to broadcast a stable WiFi network. When the network cannot pass through the classic Mesh system, the PLC is used to extend the network.

The routers allow access to an AC1200 network. However, if you use the PLC the network will be bridled at 600 Mbps. Although this speed is quite low compared to what we see in competition. This router meeting a very specific need still encountered too often in old houses, I decided to present it to you in this ranking.

I recommend this WiFi Mesh system to all people who live in an old house. Or who want to install a WiFi system in a remote location.

Summary :

  • Size: Compact and lightweight
  • Simplicity: Very easy to install and configure
  • Stability: Stable and efficient WiFi network
  • Performance: AC1200
  • Features: Router, Access point, Bridge
  • Advanced: Antivirus, No integrated VPN, IFTTT support (Alexa, Google assistant…)
